For over 25 years I’ve been promoting the use of fertigation to farmers and growers
across New Zealand. Fertigation is the process of applying liquid N-P-K-S nutrients, biostimulants
and trace elements the irrigation water—an efficient, effective method that maximises nutrient uptake and supports sustainable farming.
The fertilisers we recommend are high-tech, free flowing and in a true liquid form making them easy to use, handle and manage. This also allows for tailor made fertiliser programmes to be formulated for each individual farm based its nutrient status. These advanced liquid formulations allow farmers to grow high-quality pasture, crops, and produce increased yields economically that are softer on the soils.
While there are many Fertigation systems available, some can be expensive to install or labour-intensive to operate—often used to dissolve urea in one-off applications.
Unfortunately, these systems often fail to deliver consistent quality and may still carry the unwanted effects associated with traditional fertilisers on soil health and the environment.
The system I promote is different.
It’s a simple, cost-effective injection-based system that integrates easily with most irrigation setups.
It requires minimal maintenance and is easy to operate—making it accessible for most farming operations. Most importantly, it reduces the negative impact on produce quality and the environment without compromising production outcomes.
The real key to success lies in knowing when and how to apply both traditional and soluble fertilisers. By carefully managing timing and application rates, and combining this with targeted Fertigation, farmers can significantly improve both yield and product quality—without increasing costs.
This system is already being used successfully on dairy and cropping farms across both the North and South Islands. It can work on your farm too.
